The system is4® (Sensitive Spaces Securing System) was designed as a response to the existing need in many warships of having an automatic access control for personnel to sensitive spaces within the vessel. Standard terrestrial systems have proven not suitable for the task, since they tend to fail short after commissioning. Moreover, the strict quality control demanded to military-grade access control systems, plus the naval certification requirements, make it very difficult for standard commercial products to fulfil the specifications attached to such sensitive security systems. Last, but not least, the harsh conditions reigning in a warship regarding ac electric power quality, electromagnetic interference, vibrations and shock, marine environment, low power consumption, smallest size and weight, maintainability or very long product life cycle demand a system specifically designed for the application.

Besides, two additional characteristics make is4® the most suitable security system for the Navy:

  • It integrates with all other systems within the vessel, through the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). This is a standard feature of is4® .
  • An extensive set of documentation accompanies the system, including the documents usually requested by NATO Quality, Logistic and Operational Standards.

is4® has been fully developed by iintegra, specifically for the application. The system makes possible a strict access control to the sensitive spaces within the warship, while satisfying the highest security, quality and normative requirements demanded by the Navy. To date, 22 large warships belonging to various Navies count is4® as their reference security system.

MAIN FEATURES OF THE SYSTEM:

  • System specifically designed to be used in the naval field. The harsh conditions the system must withstand were present since the beginning of its development.
  • The units are fully integrated and do not require any additional equipment. The communication with other systems within the warship is guaranteed through the IPMS.
  • Integration in a single unit of various subsystems which are normally separated in other security systems, providing enhanced functionality and a full set of operational records.
  • A single power supply (usually 115Vca or 230Vca, although any other option is possible) and a communication channel with the IPMS (usually Ethernet or RS485, other options also possible) is all that is needed.
  • Truly redundant dual internal power supply units, battery powered in case of mains failure, with over 12 hours of battery life. It is virtually impossible to have a general power blackout in any part of the system. If any of the internal power supply units fail in any system, the other one has power enough to support all electric/mechanic peripheralls attached to each sensitive space, while a warning message is sent to the IPMS. The maintenance crew has plenty of time to replace the faulty unit. The internal power supply units can be replaced without switching off the system.
  • If any battery takes more power than usual (a clear signal of wear), a warning message is sent to the IPMS for the maintenance crew to replace the worn battery. Batteries get replaced long before they are dead. Batteries can be replaced without switching off the system.
  • Electronic protection of batteries, to avoid the complete discharge of any of them.
  • The system can control any door, gate, airlock, watertight gate or hatch within the vessel.
  • Electronic protection of the electromechanical lock, to avoid lateral impacts from the door or gate leaf.
  • Electric protection against transients, voltage peaks, overloads and higher harmonics, coming from outside or inside the units. Any inductive circuit is endowed with free-wheeling diodes to increase the system’s life.
  • Anti-tamper monitoring circuit for any cabinet containing electronic equipment. Any tampering attempt is immediately reported to the IPMS as an alarm signal.
  • Direct communication with the ship’s IPMS. is4® sends information to IPMS about any relevant event occurring in the system. The signalled events are freely programmable, although typical alarm messages are: door forced open, door left open, duress access, power failure, tampered cabinet... Optionally, the system could receive information from the IPMS about the status of each sensitive space, in order to modify the control policy (fire alarm, combat condition, silent navigation…).
  • Log in a database of any event occurring in the system. In case of any unit being offline, the events are kept in a local database and synchronised with the general database once that unit is back online. The database could be used to generate status reports or historical reports under user request. Data could be exported in a variety of standard formats (ASCII text, Excel, pdf...).
  • Complementary to automatic operations, it is possible to manually grant access to any sensitive space by the crew personnel already present in such space. A warning system exists in each secure space for unauthorised personnel to request access.
  • It is possible to remotely release or block any door, either manually or automatically through time windows, or as a response to previously defined events
  • Optional integration with CCTV systems to control images, video recording, lighting conditions… in any secure space. Images could be stored centrally or locally.
  • It is available a version of is4® that has surpassed the shock test according to the norm MIL-STD-S-901D.
