iosf® system is an Automatic Fast Fire Detection System for Open Spaces that iintegra group has developed to be used in open spaces, like industrial estates, ports, forests etc..., with good communications with the central control. The system has a range above 3.5 km and can cover an area larger than 4.000 hectares, which is a huge area for industrial estate standards or an acceptable coverage for small forests where fire protection is needed.

iosf® will provide a reduction of risks associated to the fires in those spaces and the potential losses that fires can generate in economic terms (destruction of buildings or natural resources).

iosf® is based on the technology called Optical Pseudo-random Signal Extraction and Noise Elimination (OPSENE), or with the more intuitive name of NeoLIDAR, as it shows similarities with LIDAR. iosf® sends out the so-called Pseudo-Random Modulated Beam (PRMB) above the skyline drawn by the buildings, warehouses or manufacturing units to be protected, or the horizon in a forest. This PRMB is normally lost to infinity and nothing returns to the system. If a smoke plume appears over the horizon, the PRMB impacts against it and the scattering phenomena takes place. Thus a fraction of PRMB is scattered at 180 degrees (backscattering), and returns to the system where it is detected. The software analysies the tiny fraction of PRMB received, in order to evaluate whether it corresponds to a false alarm. In case of positive identification an alarm warning is sent to the Control Centre, together with a picture of the smoke plume, so that an operator can assess the seriousness of the alarm and decide upon the appropriate course of action.

iosf® can be used to detect very fast the smoke coming from just-started fires in large open spaces, either in industry or in forest.

A graphical representation of the functioning of the iosf® can be seen in the animation shown below.

MAIN FEATURES:

  • iosf® has been designed to detect fires at a very early stage or the emission of contaminants into the atmosphere in industrial units, residential areas, shipyards, manufacturing warehouses... The system can detect fires before the smoke has formed a large, visible column, and even when there is no open flame, and the temperature of the burn is very low.
  • A single iosf® unit guarantees the detection of fires in roughly 4.000 hectares and further units can be added to extend the coverage. These units are completely autonomous and automatic, and do not require local human intervention.
  • iosf® can work 24 hours per day 7 days a week (24/7) and its capacity is improved during nighttime.
  • The detection is done by measuring of the scattering of light by smoke (or some other atmospheric contaminant).
  • iosf® sends out the so-called Pseudo-Random Modulanted Beam (PRMB) above skyline drawn by the buildings, warehouses, manufacturing units... to be protected, and detects any tiny fraction of the PRMB which returns to the receiver as it gets scattered by a smoke plume hovering over horizon (optionally extra detectors can be used to extend the coverage).
  • The system continuously scans the area under its control, and records the signal returned at each point, and can complete a full 360 degree sweep in some three minutes.
  • iosf® is insensitive to other infrared light sources, such as sunlight, artificial lighting, and optical communication system and will only respond to its own emitted PRMB light.
  • Once a iosf® unit detects a signal that indicates fire, it captures an image of the point where the signal come from and sends the information to a Control Centre. At the Control Centre it is expected that a final decision on whether there is a true danger will be made by a human operator.
  • A single Control Centre can manage a larger number of untis, and can be integrated into other control systems.
  • iosf® can be remotely controlled from the Control Centre.
  • iosf® software can be remotely upgraded, even its firmware. No need to go to the installation place to upgrade the systems.
  • iosf® sends technical warnings related with potential failures (low battery, mains supply cut...) to the Control Centre, in order to facilitate the system's maintenance.
An example of how the system would work at ports, free ports, shipyards and their storage areas can be seen below.

Surveillance at ports, free ports, shipyards and their storage areas

iintegra group has developed an automatic fast fire detection system for open spaces that can be used in different areas, and obviously one of its many applications would be the surveillance at ports and the containers in its storage areas, where there could be a significant amount of those in a large space and a possible fire could cause a great loss in economic terms if it's not detected early.

In those places iosf® fits perfectly as a fast fire detection system. Of course the system will also detect any fires in ships or other technical buildings located in the area under its influence.

If the beam hits a solid object or a column of smoke or dust, it will produce scattered light in all directions, including that of the detector, otherwise the beam will vanish into the horizon. When the system picks up any of the beam sent out by the emitter, its software double check the coordinates from which the scattered beam comes from, sending out again the beam to the same geographic point detected in the first place. If the scattered light is still present, it will take a picture of the source of the signal and scan again to determine its size. The data is sent to the central control located in the port where a human operator will have to make decisions on whether there is a fire or a false alarm.

iosf® is a system that works 24/7 sending signals continuously to monitor the area under its influence with the same capability even if there is no daylight, in fact it works even better at night, because the system only responds to its own emitted light.

The system would work pretty well at any of the places shown in the pictures, as a fast fire detection device.
